Top 10 Funeral Plans to Compare in 2026

Choosing a funeral plan is about more than finding the lowest price.

A prepaid funeral plan allows you to arrange and pay for your funeral in advance. But with different funeral plan providers offering different levels of cover, payment options and cancellation terms, understanding exactly what you’re paying for is important.

A plan that looks cheaper at first glance may not necessarily offer the best value for you if certain services aren’t included as standard. Equally, paying more doesn’t automatically mean a plan will better suit your wishes.

So, how do you compare funeral plans properly?

We’ve looked at ten funeral plan providers and compared five areas that can make a meaningful difference: price, what’s included, independent Fairer Finance ratings, cancellation fees and instalment options.

What should you look for when comparing funeral plans?

  1. Don’t compare on price alone

It’s tempting to start with one question – how much does the funeral plan cost?

Price matters, of course, but it doesn’t tell you the whole story.

In our comparison, prices start at £1,555, but the cheapest funeral plan isn’t automatically the right funeral plan for you. Look at what the quoted price actually includes. Depending on the plan, there may be differences in areas such as collection of the person who has died, cremation fees, the coffin provided, removal of medical devices and return of ashes.

A difference of £50 or £100 in the headline price can become much less significant if one plan includes services for which another provider may make an additional charge.

2. Understand what “all-inclusive” really means

This is one of the most important parts of comparing prepaid funeral plans.

Nobody wants their family discovering later that something they reasonably expected to be covered isn’t.

Before choosing a plan, look at the details rather than simply the plan name.

Ask questions such as:

  • Are cremation fees included?
  • Is collection available 24 hours a day?
  • Are there restrictions around collection from home?
  • Are there mileage restrictions?
  • Is removal of medical devices such as pacemakers included?
  • Is provision made for people requiring a bariatric or oversized coffin?
  • Is the return of ashes included?
  • Could my family face additional charges?

This is also where independent product ratings can be useful.

3. Look at independent ratings

Fairer Finance independently assesses prepaid direct cremation plans against a set of product features. Importantly, its ratings don’t assess plans based on price and aren’t recommendations or financial advice. Instead, Fairer Finance looks at core features included as standard.

For a direct cremation plan to achieve its five-star rating, Fairer Finance says it must meet criteria including guaranteed cremation fees, 24-hour collection, free delivery of ashes, no additional charge for certain collections or removal of medical devices, and a cancellation fee below £100.

Independent ratings therefore give consumers another way of assessing what they’re getting for their money alongside price.

4. Consider how you want to pay

Many people aren’t able to pay for a funeral plan in one lump sum, which makes the provider’s instalment options another important comparison point.

Some funeral plan providers allow customers to spread the cost for a certain period without an additional instalment charge, while others charge for paying monthly.

Funerals with Grace, for example, allows customers to spread the cost over up to 24 months without an instalment charge.

Before committing to any funeral plan, look at the total amount you’ll repay, rather than the monthly figure alone. A lower monthly payment over a longer period can feel more affordable, but the overall amount paid may be higher.

5. Check the cancellation terms

It’s probably not the first thing you’ll think about when choosing a funeral plan, but circumstances change.

That’s why it’s worth understanding what happens if you later decide the plan is no longer right for you, or if you change your mind in the future

Look at:

  • the cooling-off period;
  • whether a cancellation fee applies afterwards;
  • how much that fee is;
  • what happens to money already paid.

As our comparison shows, cancellation charges can vary considerably between funeral plan providers. It’s a small detail when you’re buying a plan, but potentially an important one later.

Are prepaid funeral plans regulated?

Yes.

Prepaid funeral plans have been regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) since July 2022. Firms providing or selling regulated funeral plans must have the appropriate FCA authorisation or permissions. The FCA says its regulation is designed to help ensure products meet consumers’ needs, offer fair value and that firms properly look after consumers’ money.

Customers of appropriately authorised providers can also have access to the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) if their provider fails, as well as the Financial Ombudsman Service for eligible complaints. You can check a provider using the FCA’s Firm Checker before purchasing a plan.

Direct cremation plans versus attended funeral plans

Another important decision is the type of funeral you actually want.

A direct cremation is an unattended cremation without a funeral service at the crematorium. It can suit people who prefer something simple, or families who would rather hold a separate celebration or memorial in their own way.

An attended cremation plan provides the opportunity for family and friends to attend a funeral service – neither is inherently better.

The right choice comes down to what matters to you: how you want to be remembered, whether you want a formal service and what you’d like your family to experience when the time comes.

So, which funeral plan is right for you?

There’s no single funeral plan that’s right for everyone.

Your decision might be influenced by price. For somebody else, having an attended funeral service may be non-negotiable. Another person might want the simplicity of an unattended cremation and the freedom for their family to remember them separately. The important thing is to compare what you’re actually getting rather than simply comparing headline prices.

Check what’s included. Look at independent ratings. Understand any additional charges. Compare cancellation terms. Consider how you’ll pay. And, above all, choose something that reflects what you want.

At Funerals with Grace, our funeral plans start from £1,595, with options ranging from a simple direct cremation through to attended services. Our Direct Cremation Plan has also received a five-star Fairer Finance rating.

Because planning ahead isn’t about finding the most expensive funeral or even necessarily the cheapest.
