Simple and affordable
What is a Direct Cremation?
A direct cremation is an unattended cremation arranged after the death of a loved one. It provides families with a simple, dignified alternative to a traditional funeral, without a formal service or mourners present. The ashes (cremated remains) are either returned to the deceased’s loved ones or scattered according to their wishes.
People choose direct cremation services for many different personal reasons. For some families, they provide a simpler way to navigate the grieving process during an already difficult time. Others value the flexibility to hold their own celebration of life or remembrance at a later date. It’s a popular choice that can also help reduce cremation fees compared to a traditional funeral service. It means families can focus on honouring the person they’ve lost, rather than managing the formalities of a traditional service. Many later choose to celebrate their loved one’s life in a way that feels right for them.

We Carry Out an Unattended Cremation

Unlike a traditional service, there is no formal ceremony at the crematorium. Families can make their own arrangements to remember their loved one afterwards, at a time and place that feels appropriate.

Direct Cremation FAQs About Our Direct Cremations in the UK
A direct cremation involves arranging the collection of your loved one, bringing them into our care, transportation to a crematorium and an unattended cremation. Depending on the package selected, arrangements can then be made for the ashes to be returned to the family or handled in accordance with the service terms.
The requirements will depend on where the death occurred and where the direct cremation will take place. Depending on the circumstances, you’ll usually need to register the death and complete the relevant government forms before the cremation can take place. Our team will explain the process and let you know what documentation is required.
Some of the required documents include:
A Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) from a medical doctor.
Certificate for Burial or Cremation, otherwise known as a Green Form in Great Britain and Wales. Deaths in Scotland require a Form 14 Certificate of Registration of Death.
If a coroner was involved, they will issue a Form 101 or Form 6 instead of a Green Form. In Scotland, a Form E1 Procurator Fiscal’s Certificate is required if the death needed to be investigated.
A Cremation 1 Form signed by a relative or executor to authorise the cremation. Form A1 is required in Scotland for the cremation of an adult.
The overall timeframe depends on factors such as administrative tasks, crematorium availability and clearances from your local authority.
We will then arrange delivery of your loved one’s ashes within 28 days of the cremation.
Yes, your family will be informed of the arrangements and the crematorium used. Even though direct cremations are unattended, your funeral arranger will maintain close, direct communication throughout the process. They can answer any questions and will keep you updated on timing, next steps and the return of the ashes.
