The appropriate steps will depend on where you are in Great Britain and how the death occurred.
For deaths that occur at home, contact the deceased’s General Practitioner (GP) or the National Health Service (NHS 24) on 111. A medical professional will visit the home to verify the death and complete a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD). In most cases, the MCCD is sent directly to the registrar. If the MCCD is given to you, you will need to submit it to the registrar yourself when registering the death.
In the case of an unexpected death, call 999 immediately and avoid disturbing the scene. The police and medical personnel may decide to refer it to the Procurator Fiscal for a post-mortem examination.
Deaths in hospitals and care homes are usually handled by medical staff and bereavement teams. They verify the death and forward the MCCD to the relevant city council’s registration team. In Scotland, a death can be registered at any registration office, regardless of where the death occurred. You can contact a funeral arranger who will collect the deceased once the verification is finalised.
