An unattended cremation takes place without mourners present, but is still carried out with the same dignity, care and respect. The process follows professional, compliant service standards.
The appropriate steps depend on where and how the death occurred.
If the death occurs at home, call the deceased’s General Practitioner (GP) or the National Health Service (NHS 24) on 111. A medical professional will visit the home to verify the death and complete a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD). In many cases, the MCCD is sent directly to the registrar. If you are given the MCCD, you will need to give it to the registrar yourself to register the death.
In the case of an unexpected death, call 999 immediately and avoid disturbing the scene. The police and medical professionals may refer it to the Procurator Fiscal for a post-mortem examination.
Deaths in hospitals or care homes are typically handled by medical staff and bereavement teams. They verify the death and forward the MCCD to the Edinburgh City Council Registration Team. In Scotland, a death can be registered at any registration office, regardless of where the death occurred. You can contact a funeral arranger who will collect the deceased once the verification is finalised.
Yes, our staff may arrange viewings at a funeral home at an additional cost. This allows the family to say goodbye in a private, calm space before the service.
This isn’t included as standard in every funeral type. Where a viewing can be arranged, it will be offered as an additional, chargeable service not included in the initial funeral cost.
